The following are NOT valid reasons to be on deck:
-
To give your child food or a water bottle
-
To find your child's heat and lane
-
To look at results
-
To remind your child to kick hard or end strong or whatever other COACHING you think he/she needs
-
To locate your child so he/she won't miss his/her race
-
To locate your child so you can leave
Swimming is great for teaching your child, even your young child, personal responsibility. The older kids will help the younger children find their lanes and heats. The coaches will coach the swimmers in practice. Your child will sometime miss a race and the world won't end but it will probably be the last race he/she will miss. Arrange with your child ahead of time for the child to meet you in the stands AFTER the meet so you don't have to go find him/her.
2. DO NOT bring any pets to any meet. This includes “purse dogs,” birds, cats, snakes, hamsters, etc..
3. DO NOT argue with, engage in a discussion with or even approach officials or timers to complain about a call or time or situation involving your child.
If proper procedures have not been followed, the coach will address it with the appropriate official. Arguing with an official is a valid reason for removing the parent from the meet.
4. Don't Coach Your Child
After each race, the swimmers will warm down (if there is a warm down pool), speak to their coach for splits and a debrief and THEN come to see you. Be encouraging and upbeat with your swimmers. Don't coach—say, “Great job!” Or, “What did your coach say?” Or, “How did you feel about the race?” It can be very confusing for children when their parents are giving one piece of advice and the coach another. Let the coaches coach!

Re: Parents using the athletic facilities at Drew University while their children are practicing
It has come to our attention that a number of parents have been inappropriately using some of the Drew Athletic Facilities. As stated in the Rules of Conduct on the Parents' website ( Handbook: Conduct.html )
As guests of the Drew facility, we shall be considerate of others using the locker rooms, hallways and facility as a whole. The upstairs, including the vending machines and athletic areas other than the pool and locker room are off-limits to BAC families. Parents may wait in the main lobby on the first level or in the locker room area outside of the pool.
Any family (athlete, sibling, parent, babysitter, etc.) found using the facility inappropriately from this point forward will be asked to leave the team.
There are no exceptions to this rule. If you think you are an exception and are allowed to use the facilities, please speak to Tristan Formon before using them again. You may use the bathrooms at the top of the stairs or in the locker room but only the athletes may use the showers.
Please reread this Code of Conduct in its entirety before you come to the next Drew Practice and review with your athlete.
We are guests of Drew, a private university. Berkeley Aquatic Club has a contract with the University for the use of the pool and the locker rooms by the athletes only. We do not have permission to use any other part of the facility. We are not at Drew as individuals but as members of Berkeley Aquatic Club and the Club are responsible for the behavior of its members while there. Violations of this rule will jeopardize our contract with Drew University to rent the pool. If we do not have Drew available to us, we will have to cut our age group program in half!! We ask that if any parent sees another parent, sibling or BAC family member violating the Code of Conduct, that they report it to Tristan or any other coach on deck at that time immediately.
